The Queen of Nothing

Updated: Jun 20, 2022

I've always been a harsh critic, however, I've got to admit... The Queen of Nothing deserves nothing less than five stars.

*This review is spoiler-free!*

The Queen of Nothing (The Cruel Prince #3) book cover.
The Queen of Nothing - Holly Black

I will forever wish to experience the wonders within the world of Elfhame for the first time time and time again.

While I was reading the first two books in The Cruel Prince trilogy, I paid no mind to the fact that the books were passing by oh-so-quickly, as my undying love for them hadn't developed just yet. I suppose this was because of The Cruel Prince being a book more for the world-building and introductory purpose than to really engage the readers with the characters. The first book’s focus mainly surrounds Jude, as do the rest; however, Holly wants her readers to be accustomed to the character and her personality as much as possible in this book. The book may have been extremely informational, but it was far from boring. The Wicked King is where the plot really comes in, as Holly ended the previous novel with something that left us desperately wanting to pick up the next book; a twist.

The Queen of Nothing, by far the rock that holds everything together in this trilogy, is everything these books needed to make them unforgettable. As we grow up watching movies, witnessing new plots unfold, and re-experiencing old plots, we remember the things that stand out to us. Holly Black’s story contains so many different plot events that it’s impossible to remember them all. Some books or movies will have something like a kidnapping, a murder, a poisoning, etc., but it isn’t too often where you find oh-so-many of these bunched up into such a short amount of writing, making it feel like three books are a whole lifetime. I recommend annotating as you read these books, more specifically the plot twists and possible foreshadowing moments, as you'll easily find yourself catching much more within Holly's writing than you normally would. Plus, the amount of heartwarming quotes that are in the last book, let alone the others, is astonishing (you have to mark them!). It makes the story so much more engaging when you discover connections between the past and present as you flip to the next page.

Closing this book brought me that sense of happiness and sorrow that every reader dreads and loves...

Knowing that my time in the wonderful world formed on those pages has come to an end, but also loving that I experienced something beyond anything that my words can explain.
